About this work
This composition summarizes the importance of music as a recurring theme in Watteau’s artworks: a painter with palette in hand stands behind someone playing a viola da gamba. On the basis of another print, the figure of the painter can be identified as Watteau himself, while the musician is probably Jean de Jullienne – an important patron who commissioned a large series of reproductive prints after Watteau’s paintings.
