Seated by the cross, Mary bewails the body of the deceased Christ, which lies on her lap. This print is part of (the second state of) a series of 29 views of paintings and sculptures in churches in Rome, numbered 1-16 and 1-13. (The first state of this series, in which the prints are unnumbered, also includes a title print).
