About this work
Two daughters of King Cecrops, Herse and Agraulos, have opened the basket that Athena had entrusted to their sister Pandrosos. From the basket, which lies on its side, the child Erichthonius crawls out, with a snake's tail as hindquarters. This sight drives Herse and Agraulos to madness. Pandrosos looks on in surprise. The print is part of a series with Biblical, mythological and allegorical subjects.
