About this work
Rembrandt captures the features of Clement de Jonghe here with loose, sketchy lines. This Amsterdam print publisher lived in the Waag, a mere stone’s throw from Rembrandt’s house. The portrait’s informal character suggests they might have been friends. Soon after, De Jonghe acquired 74 of Rembrandt’s etching plates, cashing in on impressions that he pulled from them.
