About this work
Louis XIV, depicted as Jupiter, directs his thunderbolts at a crouching lion (Spain) beneath him. From the sea, Neptune (England) approaches the coastline. He stands on a chariot drawn by hippocampi. Mars (Holy Roman Empire), with a shield bearing a double-headed eagle, drives the lion further into a corner. Like Neptune and Jupiter, he also carries fasces. Stars shine upon the three figures. At the top two lines of Latin poetry referring to peace. Allegory on the Peace of the Pyrenees, which on 7 November 1659 brought an end to the Franco-Spanish War.
