About this work
In an interior a surgeon kneels by the bare leg of a man, who looks startled and with open mouth at the viewer. Behind them stands a woman with folded hands. Next to her a dog. In the background a cabinet with bottles and mortars, and on the left in the foreground a tortoise, the symbol for feeling (attribute of Venus).
