About this work

On a dais sits an allegorical female figure with a mirror on her chest: the personification of teachability. Next to her is a bird, the wisest of all animals, and her foot rests on a wild boar, the least teachable of animals. Behind her stand the personifications of painting, with palette, and poetry, with a roll of paper. In the foreground, two children view an image.
