Odysseus manages to save himself from the sea monster Charybdis by clinging to a fig tree, visible in the left background. In the foreground, Odysseus is received by Calypso. Mercury descends from Olympus to ask Calypso to let Odysseus go. In the foreground, Odysseus builds a raft.
