Christ falls, despite the help of Simon of Cyrene, while carrying his cross to Golgotha. A Roman soldier urges him to get up. Veronica offers to wipe the sweat from his face with a cloth. Letters stand next to various elements of the scene corresponding to the legend in the margin.
