About this work

Portrait of Admiral Egbert Meeuwisz. Kortenaer. Kortenaer was a lieutenant-admiral who distinguished himself especially in the English wars. During the so-called Battle of the Singels he was wounded and lost a hand and an eye. These injuries only strengthened his heroic status, and the laudatory poem below the print also refers to this. Kortenaer stands with the command staff at his side before a sea battle. A cannon lies before him.
