About this work

Allegorical representation in which the Dutch Bride is courted by a Spaniard and a Frenchman, c. 1647-1648. Allegory on the peace negotiations with Spain, against the wishes of France. On the left in the background the peace negotiations in Münster. Elements in the representation are indicated by letters; however, the legend is missing. The countries are represented not only by their personifications but also by symbolic animals: the French rooster, the Dutch lion and the Spanish lion.
