About this work

The fresco by Raphael in the Stanza della Segnatura that represents supernatural truth. The fresco consists of two levels, heaven and earth. On both levels a discussion is held about the Holy Sacrament or the Eucharist. Centrally God the Father, Christ and the Holy Spirit above an altar. Next to Christ sit Mary and John the Baptist. Also present on the cloud are the apostles, evangelists and martyrs. On the earthly level stand the saints and delegates of the church such as Pope Julius II, Pope Sixtus IV, Savonarola and Dante Alighieri, who discuss transubstantiation. Above, angels float.
