About this work
Portrait of the Danish Jew, Oliger Paulli (also known as Holger Paulli). After making a fortune as a trader in enslaved Africans in the West Indies, he converted to Judaism and tried, first in Amsterdam and subsequently in Copenhagen, to convert others in a fanatical manner, e.g., via pamphlets. On the wall two images; on the left the crucifixion and on the right Christ healing two possessed persons (Matt: 8). Below the portrait a Dutch verse about the pamphlets for and against Paulli.
