About this work

The print depicts a fresco that is in the Palazzo Pitti: the meeting between Cleopatra and Augustus, after the Battle of Actium and the death of Antony. Cleopatra kneels before Augustus's feet and with her arms outstretched begs him to spare her. Augustus remains unmoved staring at the ground, following the historical description of this event by the Roman historian Dio. The print has a Latin inscription.
