Satirical print on the peace between the Netherlands and the Emperor, 1785

Satirical print on the Treaty of Fontainebleau, which ended the Keteloorlog, the disputes between the Netherlands and the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, 8 November 1785. The Netherlands paid 8.5 million guilders and accepted other humiliating conditions. On the left an Austrian toll tree where a closed carriage, driven by a French officer, in which a Prussian officer sits; the officer is stopped for payment of toll by the Austrian official, but the two Dutch servants (members of the States of Holland), who stand at the back of the carriage, say: 'We pay, my Lord!' whereupon the Prussian can continue his journey.
