Joseph’s Blood-stained Coat Brought to Jacob

Joseph’s envious brothers wanted to be rid of him and sold him to merchants on their way to Egypt. They smeared his coat with goat’s blood and showed it to their father, Jacob. He recognized the coat and so believed that Joseph had been devoured by a wild animal. Rembrandt portrays Jacob’s anguish, while the sons point to the place where they found the garment.
