About this work
Depiction of the cruelties committed by French troops in the Dutch villages of Bodegraven and Zwammerdam, end of December 1672. The inscription is held in the air by personifications of war and French cruelty. On the left the burning village of Zwammerdam with the drawbridge. In the foreground rapes, tortures and massacres. The image is framed in an octagonal border, wrapped in thorns and crowned with a skull. Below the image a description of the events over four columns in Dutch. A part of this description, the 'Extract', was written by A.T. Verduyn.
