About this work

The destruction of the castle of Gijsbrecht van Amstel in the year 1204. The piece written by Vondel, however, takes place in the year 1304. This may refer to the small castle that Egbert van Amestelle (or Aemstel or Amstel) built in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. This castle was destroyed in 1204 by the Kennemers.
