About this work

In 1641 Saskia gave birth to her fourth child, a son, Titus. The joy was quickly tempered by a debilitating illness she suffered, probably tuberculosis. When she died in 1642, she was not yet 30 years old. Rembrandt sketched her until the very end. Especially in the etching on the right he manages to capture her vacant gaze strikingly.
