About this work

Allegory with Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, as champion of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands, 1585. Parma as Hercules with club and shield is pointed by the personification of (Catholic) Religion to the temple of virtue on a rock. Before him lie defeated on the ground Envy (Invidia), Impiety (Impietas) with a broken holy image and Hostile Force (Vis Inimica). Hanging on the palm tree to the right are the coat of arms of Parma and images of the siege of Antwerp and the ship bridge in 1585. With subtitle of 2 columns of 10 lines in Latin.
