About this work

Village view with a village fair in honor of Saint Sebastian, ca. 1600. On the left the inn with a banner on which the saint Sebastian. In front of the inn and on the village square the villagers amuse themselves with eating, drinking, bowling, goose shooting and dancing. Also the excesses: drunkenness, vomiting, stealing and fighting. In the foreground on the right a man gives an alms to a beggar, on the left a peddler sells hobby horses and other toys, in the background market stalls and a procession with a Marian image at the village church. In the inscription 2 verses of 4 lines in French and Dutch, above the representation an inscription in Latin.
