About this work

Detail of the scene of maid Elsje van Houweningen catching Hugo de Groot, helped by his wife Maria van Reigersberch, trying out the book chest, March 1621. Van Reigersberch had devised the plan for the escape with the book chest and Van Houweningen would play a major role in its eventual execution.
