About this work

Allegory on King William III as bringer of peace in Europe with the conclusion of the Peace of Rijswijk on 20 September 1697 between France and the allies. William helps Peace from heaven to earth, before him sit the maidens of England, Ireland and Scotland, next to him Hercules rests on his club and Mars puts his sword back in the scabbard. On the right the allies kneel in gratitude for the closing of the doors of the Temple of Janus, on the left Hope welcomes the fleeing French Protestants. In the background bonfires for the peace. Front left Neptune brings goods from distant lands with the restoration of sea trade, including Chinese ceramics, ivory, textiles and a monkey. In the caption an explanation of the image in English and French.
