About this work
Allegory on the French attack on the Republic and the capture of Cadzand and the elevation of William IV to stadtholder, 1747. The Dutch Lion has woken up after being lulled to sleep by the deceit of the French sea mermaid. A shoot from the Orange tree takes up the sword against the French (the rooster sent by a cardinal or pope). In the foreground a small lion representing the province of Zeeland. In the sky an owl with a proposal for peace and a sword. On the sheet below the plate an explanation in French and Dutch and a second small plate with monster heads above a distillation oven.
