About this work
The stem of the left salt cellar consists of a couple engaged in love, seated on a pedestal. At the top lies Cybele, surrounded by animals with a baby at her breasts. She holds the actual salt cellar on her lap. The stem of the right salt cellar is decorated with scrollwork in which two tritons are trapped blowing on a shell. At the top sits Neptune on his chariot which has the shape of a shell. In it is the actual salt cellar.
