About this work

Satirical print on the legal proceedings initiated on 16 April 1785 by the two Amsterdam mayors J. Rendorp and W.G. Dedel against J.C. Hespe and J. Verlem, writer and publisher of the patriotic weekly De Politieke Kruier, and the acquittal of Hespe pronounced on 19 May. The carrier is led out of prison by Liberty, the Dutch Lion drives the two dogs back into their kennels. Below the plate, a poem in two columns.
