About this work

A Dutch patriot kneels on the ground and begs a Frenchman for help. The Frenchman, however, mockingly shows him his empty purse. On the left, a Prussian soldier and an English sailor. In the caption, the texts of the four main characters. Part of a group of four caricatures on the patriots during the Prussian invasion in October 1787. Repetition of the original version but now with English and German inscriptions. See also the pendant and the accompanying pair of caricatures.
