About this work

Allegorical representation, probably referring to the Act of Guarantee of 1788 in which the hereditary stadtholdership was guaranteed. Stadtholder William V stands, accompanied by his two sons, by the tomb of William of Orange. Opposite him stand three officials. To the left Father Time combats the monster of Slander; to the right a monument with portraits of William V's predecessors. In the background, massacres committed against the Dutch by the Duke of Alba. The print is accompanied by an explanation.
