About this work

Satirical print on the return of Rembrandt's painting The Night Watch to the Rijksmuseum after the Rembrandt exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1898. The wrapped painting is being transported to the Rijksmuseum on a hearse as if in a funeral procession. Van Riemsdijk, Pierre Cuypers and Victor de Stuers walk in front of the carriage, Breitner and Israëls to the right of the carriage. Published as an insert in the Amsterdammer, Weekblad voor Nederland, of 9 October 1898.
