About this work

Bust of Vincent Jacobsz. Coster, wine measurer and owner of the old labyrinth in Amsterdam, in an oval frame. Next to Coster's head is the family coat of arms; in his hand, a measuring rod. In the four corners next to the oval are depicted a compass, a writing tablet, a book, and a bridle, all references to Coster's profession: he was a wealthy Amsterdam wine measurer who measured the amount of wine in barrels and calculated the tax on it. Due to his profession, he was simply called Cent de Peyler.
