About this work

Beheading of the Leiden engraver Cornelis de Hooghe in The Hague on 29 March 1583. The man kneels with his upper body bare before the executioner on the scaffold. De Hooghe was condemned for treason, beheaded, and quartered. He claimed to be a bastard son of Emperor Charles V. Design for a print.
