About this work
Figures were more often portrayed in a landscape, but then mainly in paintings. Portraits on parchment were made as standalone works. The extensive pen technique was adopted by De Heer from his father Gerrit. In the background stands a family by a fountain that spits water from various skulls; on the pedestal is 'memento mori', remember to die.
