About this work

The city maiden sits on a raised platform and is surrounded by musicians and singers. Next to the platform sit two women, presumably river goddesses, with bare upper bodies. One rests her hand on a cup from which water flows as a symbol of the Meuse. In the background, the silhouette of a city. Sheet 33 recto from a sketchbook with 77 sheets.
