About this work
Van der Cooghen belonged to a group of Haarlem artists who drew from life together and, in addition to self-portraits, also made portraits of each other. He was primarily a draftsman of figures, heads, portraits. His drawing style was influenced by Flemish artists such as Rubens and Jordaens, of the latter of whom he was a pupil.
