About this work
This is a preliminary study for a watercolour accompanying a drinking song in the Poëzie-album (Poetry Album). In the foreground of this humorous work – a fairly literal illustration of the poem – we see two victims of a broken heart and in the background an unhappy man being scolded by his wife. The man leaning on a cask at the left has understood the tenor of the song, namely that drinking is preferable to heartbreak.
