About this work
Drawings of working children by Anthon van Rappard, between 1880 and 1890. The Van Houten Act did not immediately end child labor. This is also visible in Van Rappard's drawings. The two boys work in a factory; they are just checking painted wool behind the stretching frame. The young shoemaker performs home-based work. The girl carrying the stone mold works in a brick factory. The Child Labor Act only prohibited child labor in factories and workshops. Home-based work was not abolished by the law. The law also did not provide for control measures. Labor inspection would only be introduced with the Labor Act of 1889.
