About this work
Drawings of working children by Anthon van Rappard, between 1880 and 1890. The Van Houten Act did not immediately put an end to child labour. This is also visible in Van Rappard's drawings. The two boys work in a factory. They are just checking painted wool behind the spinning frame. The Children's Act only prohibited child labour in factories and workshops. Home work was not abolished by the law. The law also did not provide for control measures. Labour inspection would only be introduced with the Labour Act of 1889.
