Leendert van der Cooghen was primarily a draftsman of figures and portraits, although a few paintings by him are known. He was a wealthy man and did not have to live from his work. He adopted the use of two-colour chalk from his Flemish master Jacob Jordaens. Hendrick Goltzius also made portraits in red and black chalk in Haarlem at the beginning of the century.
