About this work
The drawing is a design for the lithograph of the famous writer Couperus (1863-1923), who was portrayed by Veth in the series 'Famous Contemporaries'. This was published on 29 May 1892 as a supplement to 'De Amsterdammer'. The drawing was made on the back of the lithograph of Arnold Kerdijk, which appeared on 15 November 1891. In 1889 Couperus published his first major psychological novel 'Eline Vere'.
