About this work
Lord William Bentinck married in 1803 Mary Acheson, daughter of the Earl of Gosford. After the fall of Napoleon, the couple resided in Rome for a time. There Ingres made two drawings of her alone and one together with her husband. Commissions for portrait drawings of English people were a necessary source of income for Ingres in Rome. These are now counted among his masterpieces.
