About this work
Mauve is depicted frontally, looking at the viewer. The top of his suit is indicated with a few chalk lines. Witsen used strong light-dark contrasts. The light comes from the right, falls over the forehead and on the hair, makes a light spot on the nose, and casts a strong shadow on the left side of the face.
