About this work
This painting belongs to the extensive genre featuring a lonely woman who must amuse herself while waiting for her lover. Here she fills the time with a yo-yo-like toy. Women engaged in all sorts of activities were among the favourite subjects of many artists, but the main character in such pictures – albeit absent and invisible – is still a man.
