About this work
This sketch is a study for a painting commissioned by Prince Francesco de' Medici, from a series celebrating the family's prosperous rule of Florence. The iconography is based on the Judgement of Paris, with an additional political subtext alluding to the choices a sovereign has to make. The elegant dancing figures, and complex allegorical content, are typical qualities of Florentine Mannerist art.
