About this work
Because of its biblical subject matter, this drawing by Frans Stamkart can be characterised as Symbolist art. However, the characterisation applies less to the technique, for which Stamkart developed an unorthodox approach of erasing certain passages in chalk. As a result, a soft light seems to break through behind the figure, giving shimmering edges to the swirling clouds, gown and veils.
