Study for the second state of the etching by Jacques Callot Le Marché d'Esclaves (also known as La Petite Vue de Paris). On a square, groups of people are engaged in the trade of enslaved prisoners. To the left, near a staircase, some bound men are shown. To the right in the foreground, a distinguished gentleman stands by a round tower (prison) counting out money to another gentleman to buy the bound enslaved Christian (?) standing behind him (free?). In the middle of the square, several prisoners with chains on their ankles follow a distinguished couple. To the left in the foreground, a man with an Eastern appearance points another couple toward the people at the tower. In the background, a view of the Isle Saint Louis, the Pont Neuf, Notre Dame, and the Tour de Nesle.
