About this work

Mary climbs up the stairs to make an offering at the Temple. This is part of the purification ritual, which was required by Jewish law after a woman gave birth. The drawing vividly demonstrates the influence of Italian art on De Weerdt. The slender, elongated figures and the interest in the effects of light and dark evoke the work of Francesco Mazzola (1503-1540), more commonly known as Parmigianino.
