About this work

In the early 19th century the mayor of Bruges, Van Huerne, had the Historia Naturalis rebound. The drawings were pasted onto pages provided with framing lines and the name of each creature inscribed in the Dutch, Latin and French forms of the time. Van Huerne also commissioned an artist to add surroundings and background to the drawings. This is how this deer came to stand on a woody patch of land.
