About this work

In the early 19th century the mayor of Bruges, Van Huerne, had the Historia Naturalis re-bound. The drawings were pasted onto pages with framing lines containing the then-current Dutch, Latin, and French names of each creature – such as the tiger on this sheet. In the handwritten caption, however, it is rightly noted that a different animal is probably depicted here. After all, tigers have a long tail and stripes rather than dots.
