About this work

This sheet features 26 different species of spiders. For most of these eight-legged creatures, De Boodt also rendered their shadows, making it seem as if they are crawling across the paper. The term 'kobben' for spiders – inscribed at the lower left within the framing line – occurs in West Flanders, where the albums were when the mayor of Bruges, Joseph van Huerne, owned them.
