About this work

The goddess Pomona bars men from her garden: she would rather reap fruit than admiration. Her passion for gardening is evident from the pruning knife in her hand. Despite this, the infatuated god of autumn Vertumnus believes she is ready for the taking. Dressed as an old woman, he sneaks into her garden. The suggestively placed walking stick hints at his true identity as a man in disguise.
